Established in the late 1960's by Malcolm Gray in Kirkwall, Orkney, Ortak has grown steadily to become one of the leading manufacturers of gold and silver designer jewellery in the UK. Malcolm began by making jewellery in his shed in a more traditional style, but as the company grew so did the extensive range of collections. Ortak is split in to OR to represent Orkney and TAK - a Norse word meaning "thank you" which therefore states "Orkney Thanks You". Orkney is well known for its rugged highland scenery, beautiful coastal landscapes and the ethos to be the "Guardians of Heritage". The Ortak manufacturing base is still in Orkney and the beauty of its surroundings often inspire designs which are unique and innovative, often with a Scottish influence and are admired worldwide. More contemporary ranges include enamels in a beautiful range of colours and quality gemstones add a touch of sparkle. Ortak's authentic design roots require close cooperation between designer and craftsmen, creating a "master" copy of the design from which to cast and replicate copies of the original to the highest of standards. Traditional silversmithing skills including this "ancient lost wax" casting technique are passed down over decades in the Orkney workshop, ensuring each piece is made by hand with dedication and precision and always hallmarked to guarantee their precious metal content.
